Can AI design a t-shirt?
Yes. Image models draw a printable t-shirt graphic in seconds, and they do bold flat illustrations of a single subject well. What they get wrong most often is lettering, which comes out misspelled or garbled, followed by resolution too low for a full-size print, a background box that prints too, and pictures of a shirt instead of flat artwork.
Lettering: put the words in as text
Image models draw letters as shapes, so a name, date or slogan often comes back with a wrong or invented letter, and it is easy to miss until the shirt arrives. Keep words out of the drawing and add them as a text layer instead: it is set in a real font, exactly as typed. In the ChatAttire studio, words are always typed, and you check every letter in the print proof before paying.
Ask for styled lettering inside the artwork only when the look of the letters is the point, and then read it letter by letter in the proof.
Resolution
Generated images are usually 1024 to 1536 pixels wide. The studio's own drawings are 1024 pixels: sharp up to about 6 inches wide, softer when larger. For a full front of 12 × 16 inches, a simple graphic with clean edges holds up better than a detailed painting. See what resolution a shirt print needs.
The background prints too
A picture prints exactly as it is, so a white or coloured box behind the design shows on any shirt that isn't the same colour. Ask for a transparent background. The studio's drawing tool has a "Remove the plain background" option, on by default, that knocks out a plain background for you.
Mockups are not print files
Ask for "a flat graphic, no shirt or mockup". A picture of someone wearing a shirt can't be printed onto a real one; the studio places the flat artwork on a photo of the actual shirt so you see how it will look.
Rights
Don't ask for logos, characters or people you don't have the rights to. Only artwork you own or have permission to print can be printed, and every design is checked before printing.
Try it
The studio has a drawing tool: describe the design, press Draw it, and it appears on the shirt. Each visitor gets 20 drawings a day at no charge, and you can also upload artwork made in ChatGPT or any other tool.
