How to design a t-shirt with ChatGPT and get it printed

Ask ChatGPT for a flat print graphic with a transparent background, download the image file itself, and upload it to a print-on-demand studio that shows it on a shirt and prints it. Leave the words out of the image and add them as text in the studio, because generated lettering is often misspelled.

Step by step

Ask ChatGPT for the artwork with the prompt below. Ask for changes until you like it.
Download the image with the download button on the image. A screenshot loses detail.
Open the ChatAttire studio, pick a shirt and colour, and upload the file or drop it onto the shirt. Move and resize it inside the print area.
Add any words as text, typed exactly as they should be printed, and pick a font and colour.
Check the print proof, choose sizes and quantities, and pay on Stripe's checkout page.

A prompt that works

Replace the part in brackets: "Create a T-shirt print design of [your idea]. Bold flat illustration with clean outlines and a limited colour palette. One centred subject, transparent background, no shirt or mockup in the image. Portrait 2:3, highest resolution."

Each part is there for a reason. A transparent background stops a box being printed behind the design. "No shirt or mockup" gets you flat artwork rather than a photo of a shirt, which can't be printed. A tall image fills the front of a shirt, whose print area is 12 × 16 inches.

How big it will print sharply

Chat images are usually about 1024 to 1536 pixels wide. That is sharp at pocket or medium size; across a full 12-inch front it looks a little soft. The studio warns you when an image will print blurry at the size you have set, so you can make it smaller or ask ChatGPT for a cleaner, simpler graphic. More in what resolution a shirt print needs.

Doing it inside ChatGPT

ChatAttire is also being prepared as an app inside ChatGPT, where ChatGPT can hand the artwork it makes straight to the studio. Chat apps has where that stands. Until then, the download-and-upload route above works with any ChatGPT plan that makes images.

Questions

Can ChatGPT order the shirt for me?

No. Orders are placed and paid by you, on Stripe's checkout page, after you approve the print proof.

Can I print any image ChatGPT makes?

Only artwork you have the right to print. Don't ask for logos, characters or people you don't have permission to use; every design is checked before printing.
